View Full Version : Oil Filter Question

Has anyone else run into this?

I have 1991 Mighty Max and all the parts stores tell me I need a STP S3950 (example) oil filter but the one on my truck is a Pro-Tec 164 and it is way smaller.

When I cross reference the Pro-Tec 164 to STP I get S6607

https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/PRO-TEC/164

I just thought it was weird.

If you buy NAPA parts they higher quality oil filters they sell are noticeably larger in diameter. I assume this is for more filtering materiel. The threaded hole in the middle is the same.

A tip - check the thread diameter of the recommended filter and then take a look at some of the other filters on the shelf (some have the diameter dimensions stamped into the mounting plate where the oil seal is located). 2 things can happen. You can find a bigger filter to replace the recommended unit (as 85ram has pointed out, more filtration surface + increased oil volume = good) and/or a substitute filter can work out cheaper. Be aware that cross reference part numbers don't always correspond and some don't even show up as a match. If you aren't sure (and it's practical to do so) take the old component in to be 95%ish sure.

I entered all the years for 2nd Generation Mighty Max into Autozone web site and searched for oil filters, and came up with the following:

There seems to be some serious errors on Autozone's web site because my 1991 Mighty Max has the 22 mm filter threads. So Autozone is wrong or I don't have the right engine.

Correction: they are all 20 mm. I was looking on the 'notes' section of the STP filter where it said '22 mm.'

Be weary of the data on Autozones' site anyway. I used the torque specifications for the big end/rod caps for my Hyundai and they were waaay out. So much so that the bottom end locked up. Luckily I made the effort to cross check specs and manually try to rotate the bottom end by hand before doing catastrophic damage to my bearings...

Last I knew, NAPA Gold filters are just relabeled Wix, which are well-made filters. IMO Baldwin are even better but can be tricky to find locally (usually only at tractor/fleet distributors) unless you order online.

Anyway, the key specs are the threading, gasket diameter, and bypass valve PSI; as long as those are the same (or at least bypass PSI does not significantly exceed the spec), you can swap to any larger filter that will fit in the available space underhood. I'd go direct to the filter mfr's site for specs (Wix, Baldwin and Purolator are pretty good about this) rather than relying on any auto parts vendor, where any specs they post are secondhand and thus potentially erroneous.

Some filter mfrs. may consolidate their line esp. for filters only used on older vehicles, obsoleting several larger filter models and superseding their part nos. with a single, common, smaller one (which is thus guaranteed to fit within the same physical dims) that otherwise has the same key specs, and just keep that one in production. I highly doubt any mfr. would bother checking whether a larger filter model might also physically fit the space available for any specific vehicle application, but we can do that for ourselves. (That's how I found out my Lancia can use the Motorcraft FL1A size normally spec'd for the classic Ford Windsor & Cleveland V8s.)
