I just got a used ‘94 4 cylinder Mighty Max and when looking at the dipstick, it has no real markings for full or low oil. I apologize if this is a stupid question, but how can I tell if I need to add more oil by looking at the dipstick?

The truck has a bit of a regular oil leak and I have been super conscious of the oil level and not wanting to run it low on oil. What happens if I put too much oil in? Is it easy to damage the vehicle if it runs low on oil between checks? I am just wanting to make sure I take care of this great truck and keep it going for years to come. Thank you everyone for your help!

Hi and welcome to mightyram. It should have dimples stamped into it, or 'max' engraved into one side of the dipstick or alternatively it has been put into a press and flattened out at one end with 'MIN' and 'MAX' in raised letters and level indicators. It is important not to overfill the sump as it can cause bottom end damage to the engine. A little over won't be enough to pose a risk (1/8" at the most) but it's not as hazardous as running it dry. One of the quirks of Mitsubishis is oil consumption due to valve stem seal failure. With regular oil changes you can expect to get 10-12 years out of them before they go hard and allow oil to pass down the valve stems and into the combustion chambers. It's pretty much the #1 cause of oil burning.
