Starter solenoid burn contacts

What would cause the starter solenoid to burn and not make connection. I have to replace the solenoid about once a year for quite a number of years because of this. Have replaced the starter a couple of times with no difference. Is is a a abnormality for this truck? Dodge ram 50 4x4 2.6 l.

That is strange. They all get power direct from the battery, so it's not as if they're likely to receive power excessive enough to burn them out.

How do you determine they "burn" contacts? Open them up and inspect? Carbon deposits on the contacts may be a red herring. Have you put an ohmmeter to the terminals to see if the windings became an open or shorted circuit?

Bad starter, causes excessive resistance in the contacts and the heat frys the wiring

I agree, I don't understand why this happens. It starts as a intermittent no contact and if you continue to try to start it eventually works but gets worse over time. I have taken the solenoid apart and the contacts have burn places on them. I can file them off and they will work for a while.

How's your power wire and grounds

Thats because you have too small of a surface area for the amps going through it. AND OR dirt. and bad ground wires from the block to the batt.
