I have a 1988 D50 FWD with 2.6L engine. During cylinder head replacement I discovered a lengthy crack around the #4 tube of the OEM exhaust manifold. Anyone know if this is cast steel or cast iron?

It's iron. Salvage Hunter in Austell lists one for sale on car-part.com

Try a weld repair

TARGET the manifold to prevent warping

1) V notch joint prep along the crack
2) preheat the manifold to at least 200F
3) use a cast type welding rod & stick weld the joint
4) cover the manifold with a fireproof blanket to let it cool slowly

If the weld cracks then grind out the weld metal & V notch the joint again BUT use a 110-15 low hydrogen welding rod & a little more amperage...

Good Luck

I figured he could get one from the salvage yard way cheaper than paying to have it welded. In my thought process, if he was a welder he would have done that already. Or spent that money on a custom 4-into-2-into-1 header.

My bad, I thought he had welding capability because he asked what was the base material (steel or iron)
If his wrecking yards don't have it maybe he has a friend that can do the weld repair..?
My bad too in that I like doing things the hard way ;^) Daily Overhauls Do Get Expensive

I have an exhaust manifold for that engine - let me know if you still need one. Also have a Pacesetter header for that if you want something better - NOS later design.
