Potential 2.6l motor replacements

Hello all. I have a 1989 Ram 50, with a 2.6l Auto trans. The motor seized, due to over-heating...nothing new there from what I've read. I DO NOT want to rebuild this motor, or replace it with another 2.6. The truck itself is cherry, so I do want to get it on the road again. My question for this forum, is what is the best motor to install in this '89 Ram 50...with Auto tranny (four speed).

I have a 1993 Mazda B2200, and have access to more Mazda vehicles, etc. Not sure if these would mate to the Auto...or work at all for this truck. I am NOT an accomplished mechanic, but can do basic vehicle work...and have replaced many motors and trannys.

Anyway, to summarize...I'm looking for the easist, most cost effective resolution to replace the 2.6...with a dependable motor.

Unless you want to do some fabrication and wiring, the only tying that is going ti bolt right up is another 2.6.

Darn, I was hoping that this - 1990–1993 2.4 L 4G64 I4, 116 hp (87 kW) - might be an option. So, you're saying that nothing but a 2.6 will bolt to that 4-speed Auto?

Geeez...sure wish I knew that when I bought it.

Why so down on the 2.6l? No few of them on this site and I've never heard of anyone complaining about them (well, not much anyway). Good solid engine... Mine had the crud beat out of it and some pretty lax maintenance, spun a rod bearing at 154,000 miles, has run decent since (I fiddle with it too much, so not as good as it should).

If it over heated, I would assume low coolant or lack of cooling maintenance is the issue (too late for the old engine...), not a flaw with the 2.6l.

The 2.4 will bolt up to the 2.6 auto tranny but you will need the entire engine wiring harness and ecu and all associated parts for the 2.4 since you are changing to fuel injection

First off, am I correct in assuming that the 1989 Ram 50 is ONLY equipped with a KM148 Auto Trans? If so, what other 4 cyl motors can I mount to it? Will the Ram 50 1990–1993 2.4 L 4G64 I4, 116 hp, fit in my '89, with the KM148? What about the 'DOHC turbocharged intercooled version' of the 4G63, offered in the Galant? What about the 'turbocharged 2.0 L 16-valve DOHC 4G63T' offered in the early '90's Eclispes? What about Mazda B2200 or B2600 motor/tranny combinations?

Again, thanks for all the help. I a little weary about putting a V-6 in there, but if everything was to match up okay (with my existing KM148)...I guess it would be okay. Really didn't think this would be so hard to do:)

If i'm not mistaken, the 89's had 2 versions of the KM132 5-spd tranny (one for the 2.0 and one for the 2.6), the KM145 (5spd 4x4) and for automatics they have a AW327 (2wd) and the KM148 (4x4) although I'm not sure what the bellhousing size difference is from the 5 spd's to the auto's. I did the swap from a 2.6 to the 2.4L in my '89. The wiring had it's challenges (the steering column harness is not plug and play, easy fix if you can get the controls with the new harness, but I had to swap the guts into my existing box for turn signals, lights, wipers ect.) and depending on what differences there are between your truck and the donor. I had to get a little creative on mine to turn the 2wd harness from the 2.4 into a 4wd harness in my truck, nothing real tricky just a bit of a pain in the behind. I'm not sure what other guys have done for swaps on their trucks being able to keep the stock tranny but with the 2.4 at least you are still working with the same color codes for more of the rest of the electrical within the truck. It's a lot of tedious work but my 2.4 is a pretty strong and smooth little motor. There's a lot of guys on here with a lot of knowledge, just trying to let you know what I do :)

No other truck/car make motor will bolt up besides a 2.6 out of a few year range mazda b2600, but thats because it is the mitsu 2.6 g54b that came in the mazdas. Like i said a 2.4(4g64) from alater mighty max will bolt up but you will need wiring harness, ecu and all accessories, same goes with the 3.0(6g72) that came in the later 4x4 mitsus.

found a shop on ebay called japan engines dont know how good their products are 1500 bucks is hard for me to save ,so if anyone has done business with them let me know if its worth spending the money?by the way the 2.6 is a good motor mine smokes like a chimmney and shakes like crazy.its time for a new motor,i got over 200,000 on the original.

You can always get one and have your machine shop go through and balance it and put in the delete kit. Hell for 1500 you can beat it.

its there not t 22r 1983-89mitusubishi 2.6sohcg54bthats the motor in a long list of 4 banger cars and trucks and minivansit might have a dodge mitsu or mazda or hundai sticker on the outside but its all mitsubishi under the hood

Yep, but it was sidearmers' thread to start off with! No thread's truly dead...Any particular reason why you didn't go for a complete engine/transmission swap sidearm? It would've opened up your options.
