New guy with a 4d55. Need a cylinder head!

Hi guys, vanderchevy recommended this site so i went ahead and signed up.
I have a 85 ranger with the 4d55, the head gasket blew so i pulled the head to discover that it is toast, cracked very badly out from the precups and cracked between all the cylinders so i need a new head. From my research it looks like i 4D56 head is a bolt on replacement and nice upgrade. Does anyone on here have a head for sale or know of a good place to buy one? Ive found a few on ebay but im not sure of the quality........

Also any tips you have of things i should do while the head is off would be great! I turned the pump up already and im looking for a little more power but not going all out as i have a duramax with over 500 hp and a thousand foot pounds of tourque for that .

    TIA

Welcome to the site and congrats on the truck. There are quite a few mitsu diesel gurus on here, I'm sure they'll be on to help you out asap. Enjoy the site, lots of cool features and info on here, especially if you become a donator.

The diesel guys arent on here all the time so it might take a few days, but dont make posts like that or you might not get any help. But if you do a search youll find what your looking for as I know ive seen that question asked a bunch and answered a bunch of times.

I did search and the only thing i found was a recommendation on where to buy heads (head-r-us on ebay), i am planning on buying a 4d56 head but was hoping someone that new if it would work or not would chime in.

The 4D56 head will bolt on to the 4D55.

your gonna be hard pressed to find a used 4d56 head in the USA. your going to have to look overseas like that ebay post.... unless you know someone who is willing to find parts and ship them over to you. while your head is off you need to look at those cyl walls..... i bet you they will have a big step in them. due to the ring design the compression adds force to they rings. good luck.

I found a complete new 4d55 head in florida on ebay Gonna buy it because its cheaper. You are right about the step at the top of the bore, does that mean it needs a rebuild?

For a good line on parts call these guys. If they can't get it, then you are going to need to scrounge the flebay.

most likely you are going to have to have the block either re sleeved or bored and locate some over sized pistons. but you first need to check the bore size and condition to see where to go from there.if you need it sleeved thats pretty easy since they are a dry sleeve and it is not Lipped.........

The ebay heads are safe to use I have installed a handful over the last year. Also buy complete with roller rockers because they are quieter and don't flatten the cams like the originals do!
