Thread: Recommend a turbo for the 2.0L

    Recommend a turbo for the 2.0L

    I was going to quit Mitsubishi once and for all. Then I bought a Ranger. I had to learn a bunch of fuel-injection acronyms and price some mods that ... well, that I didn't think were worth $3K. So I fixed the fuel injection issues and other stuff. Ranger runs like a new truck. I hate it. And it's ugly, too.

    I still have one Ram 50 truck body in good shape. Good short block bored over, de-balance-shafted, etc.

    Would those of you with turbo experience on the 2.0L be so kind as to give me some good recs for units? I'm not changing out the pistons. I've heard maybe 12 -14 psi with stock pistons is not so risky.

    Opinions requested. Chime in.

    I know the turbos from the early Cummins diesels put into Dodge trucks are good for small engines. On the Cummins they were to small and they ran them at 110% all the time to get any power out of the engines. Needless to say guys that owned the Cummins ripped them off and put on bigger units. I would call Margarete at Diamond Diesel to ask her what turbos they were. She can tell you the hole story behind them. She will know more about turbos and injectors they any person you will meat on any board. It's all she has done for the past 30 years. She knows her shit when it comes to turbos. She can recommend a turbo of the correct size for you.

    Also our new guy DGHeaders is thinking of building exhaust manifolds for you guys so you can put turbos on these engines. Now wouldn't that be fun.

    I'm running 10:1 with 30lbs of Boost, I do use 110 race gas, but you should be able to run stock CR and 10-12 on premium.
    I'm using a PTE 6262 Turbo on the 2.4L.

    For DG Headers I have a pretty good setup already for a Turbo manifold, what we really need is a good intake!

    I'm not going to turbo. I'm just getting things built for the other guys.

    If anything I would have him make manifolds for a single side draft carb.

    On ebay right now is an aussie manifold for the g54b that is a single side draft setup. 225 + shipping is steep for that, at least for me it is.

    the te04h would be a good match. they were used on the turbo dodge 2.2 and 2.5 and should not be hard to find. Having used a cummins/holset turbo i would skip it on the 2.0 liter. Way too much turbo lag.

    I would go with a garret t25 or a mitsu 14b as both gens of mitsu's 2.0l 4g63t ran them. The t25 is smaller and will spool quicker but will not push as much boost or make as much hp as a 14b can. But might be a better choice for you since you can't run too much boost anyways. Both of these turbos are very plentiful and easy to find fpretty cheap.

    conquests use a 12b turbo that can easily give you 15+lbs of boost with minimal turbo lag. Or you could get a real small turbo from a snowmobile and use the boost from that to spin up the holset from the Cummins, ala last gen RX-7

    you may look at a TD04 that they had on the srt4 neons. werent the best choice for the 2.4 but would work. and with as many srt owners that are swapping turbos, im sure you could find one relatively cheap

    you will need to convert the carb to a "blow thru" carb

    Thanks Turbomax I was going to say you need a carb that's been reworked for boost or use a pressure box around the carb. Was also thinking you could always look at the Dodge 2.2L turbo's or the Ford 2.3L turbo's from the 80's I know the Ford's used an AR11 (T3) but not sure about the Dodge's

    Look for Cordia or Tredia turbo parts - specifically the whole engine for a transplant. They are narrow block engines and will bolt directly to the transmission. The ECU is GARBAGE on these engines so swap it for a stand alone EMS like Megasquirt etc. The ECU's ran too lean (and did some other shady stuff too...) and caused exhaust manifolds to crack (this is the second issue you'll run into - finding a turbo manifold that hasn't got a crack in it) 'Bolting' a turbo onto a NA G63B is a less than ideal way to turbocharge it but you have easy options to upgrade it without a lot of work
