    3000 GT VR4 engine swap

    I have a second generation Mighty Max 3.0 V6 4x4, I am looking to swap the engine with a twin turbo V6 out of a 3000 GT VR4. Has anyone here done this swap? I can acquire the engine and computer fairly easily, but other than a boost gauge, new clutch, new computer and retrofitting the exhaust and intake to fit what else would I need? How difficult of a swap is this?

    That I hadn't thought of, but it is the same block, the 6g72 so I would think it is.

    If it's the same and will mate up then go for it. You will have a rocket ship. I don't think anyone has done that. I know the V6 was a different bell housing the the 4 bangers. Sure someone will let us know soon.

    The only problem I think I would run in to is a location for the intercoolers, I will most definetley need two with the twin turbos and all. That is really my main concern.

    Thats why we have a fiberglass guy. Hood scoops can give you more room and a place to get cool air. If there is a will there is a way. If you look in the for sale area> camoit's fabrication store. Sorry if I don't respond right away. I'm configuring the UPS shut down on the boards on-line radio station right now.

    Never really thought about hood scoops, I will have to take a look at that and begin collecting all of the parts to make this work as that will take me some time.

    Time is on your side, just don't get side tracked or put it on the back burner. Things never get finished there. Stay focused. It's hard as hell. I have spent the last 3 years building my D50. Now I'm close to the end. Take you time and do it right you will enjoy the journey.

    you could run both turbo's through one front mount intercooler provided it's big enough. I've never seen this done before, the biggest thing like camoit said is the bellhousing. With the 3000gt motor sitting transverse I dont see the bellhousing being the same. Its definitely worth a shot though.

    Go make a template of what you have or the block you are going to use. See if there the same before spending the cash and becoming committed on this swap.

    That is a Swap I considered a long time ago and would have done if I had a V6 Mighty Max. I even wanted to go so far as transplanting the entire AWD drivetrain under the Truck.

    Well it sounds like it will bolt up from what LSR just wrote. Of course he is a crazy man and will bolt together anything anyway he can just to make a flying brick go faster no matter what the cost. So use the 6 Ps on this one. I don't know.

    Yeah, from what I can tell it is a bolt up to the tranny, although undoubtedly a new clutch will be in order. Plumbing should be my only real challenge then?

    I don't think any body has done this on there yet.
    But LSR knows his stuff. He is our resident speed freak. But he has my respect. You don't 160+ in one of these trucks and not learn a trick or 2 along the way. Only God knows how much money he has spread across the salt of Utah making the truck go faster then Mitsubishi ever engineered them to. We all hope he will upload a video of him driving in the truck some day.

    That's faster than I would want to go, at least with the current front end. It starts to shake at 85.

    ya no doubt,, He holds like 2 world records in his truck. He is in one of the harder classes to race in. I don't know what he has done to the front end to make it stable. Or keep it on the ground at speed. Lord knows they feel light when you get them up to speed. But there not to bad when you strip them down the the basics. I know with mine after I put in heaver springs in the front it mad a huge difference. It might ride like a buck board but it will corner. The rear end will come loose before the front will.

    Here's a better Pix. Thanks for the praise Camoit, most of it can be attributed to too dumb to know better. had I known there is virtually NO aftermarket for the SOHC 4G64 I would not have done this.

    I actually plan on doing this swap, but not in my current truck and not for a few years( at least). Bill hichner on projectzerog.com makes a gm(?) bellhousing adapter for the 6g72

    I'm currently doing this swap...

    First off, the Engine will bolt up, even using the stock mounts, just had to trim a little on the block. Your best bet it to use a 93+ engine, due to the Cam Angle sensor, it will be into the firewall... I didn't, so thats another hurdle I have to jump later on.

    Using modifed Montero 3.5 water pipes, and stock pump, thermostat housing and modified rear cross over pipe. I'm using a starion clutch, and a truck clutch from clutchnet.com Also, there are several different routes you can go on the intake. I'm using a 2004ish Galant 3.8 upper,with the stock 3000gt lower.

    My biggest issue is space, and how the Turbo's would be located in the truck if you use stock mainfolds. They would point the wrong way and be nearly impossible to plumb. IMO

    You could make it work, with some custom adaptor flanges, but I'm looking at going single turbo. I just don't want it to be so tight under the hood.

    I'm in the process of replumbing my steering pump, then onto the AC. I deemed it better to use the car accessories. Then of course wiring is going to be fun...

    I hope you have alot of time and patience. I own a 1991 Stealth R/T TT-AWD. Very complicated car. If memory serves me correctly there are a bunch of computers in the car. Even changing the plugs is an undertaking... I'm having the timing belt and related stuff changed this year, labor along is about a grand.

    I thought about that but electronics can be changed I originally wanted to do an eclipse swap but because the v6's are newer I would have even more smog requirements (thank you CARB). Also i think the water jacket is different on the eclipse so I cant swap just the heads so I am left with the option of building a 12 valve v6 or taking my time with the vr4 but it is only money I guess lol.
