Anything can be done and I love international trucks. I grew up and my neighbor had a scout and a guy here in town has a longbed pickup. I'm just curious as to why? Other than to put that body on a lighter frame but the frame is what makes the truck so solid. And that body is too heavy to put on a d50 and expect the diesel to push it without some upgrades. Unless you got a chop top scout? Then it wouldn't be so heavy and pretty cool. I've only seen a couple. I know the IH trucks have a wider wheelbase.
Why? Because the Older Scouts look so much better than the D-50 body.
As for weight: According to the specs, the older Scouts weigh around 3,000 lbs, give or take a few depending on the powertrain.
The mighty max comes in between 2700 to 3,000.
So I wouldn't be so sure the body is too heavy.
Also, older Scouts came with a 4 cylinder gas motor in them as well.
The wheelbase is actually SHORTER on the scout.
Width, the scout is a couple of inches wider. That's it.
Might max Wb = 110 inches
Stout WB = 100"
Bottom line, the D-50 is an ugly little truck. Ok, there, I said it. Sorry if I offended anyone. It's just a blah mini truck, and looks like all the OTHER mini trucks... So I was hoping to go for something "interesting".
Bottom line, I need a light enough body to swap out with the d-50 bed and body, and make something cool. Doesn't have to be a scout, could be anything. Just want something OLD, and interesting. By old, I mean pre 1974.
Any suggestions are always appreciated. :-)

34 Airflow, and as far as the D50 being ugly compared to a pre 74 international is comparing apples to oranges. but compare it to its contemporaries of the same year, and then look at the next generation of those contemporaries which body design did they all follow the D50. Don't worry you didn't offend me I spent 20+ years in US Navy I really doubt anybody on this forum could offend me. Just saying compare apples to apples. But I do agree with you on the styling of vehicles made prior to the 70ish to now. If it was me pick something loud that stands out almost on the verge of vulgar or flamboyant. Like 61 Lancer or Valiant.

Ideally, I wanted something that would be appropriate on a 4wd, and have an enclosed area in the back for taking my dogs places, etc. I've already got a full size PU, don't need another PU.
I'd love to put a panel truck on it, but that would be WAY too heavy.
I see you used to have a 74 celica GT. Me too!
Luvs were Chevy Isuzu trucks - why not just swap the d50 drivetrain into the scout?

All the scouts I've seen had bigger engines. But pennyman's suggestion would be alot easier.
Scouts came with 4 cylinder engines first, then later years added bigger options. And a lot of guys like to drop other drivetrains into them.
As for the "easier". If it was RWD, definitely. But I've got a 4WD which completely complicates things.
If I drop a Scout body on a D-50 chassis, here's what I have to do:
Shorten the frame by 10"
Shorten the driveshaft
Shorten the brake and fuel lines.
Make new body mounts.
If I swap the entire drivetrain, here's what I have to do.
Fabricate new engine mounts
Fabricate new trans mounts
New Driveshaft
Figure out how to attach the FWD set up so I've got 4wd. There's where it can get tricky, depending on how that works.
either use the Scout's 4wd set up and somehow figure out how to link the 4d55 engine and trans to the front and rear wheels. (Rear wheels would be easy, that's just a driveshaft.
Problem is the FRONT wheels, and how to connect the front wheel setup.
But once I GET the scout, then I can put them side by side and see what makes the most sense to do.
So how come we don't see any pictures of this swap? You had better put some up or we will whip you with a window rubber.

Cause I don't HAve the scout yet! LOL. I'm still stripping the second D-50 apart, but I'm mostly there now. Cab is gutted, and ready to pull from the second frame. Know anyone who needs a good rust free cab? 4wd, diesel cab?

the frame and axles of a scout is part reason why it is such a tank..... why would you put a scout body on a D50 frame? try a d50 body on a scout frame... that sounds a little better to me! I do also own a scout II and love it, but it is rusty as all hell and not road worthy any more....
Because I don't like the D-50 body, the scout body suits my purposes.
Get a montero and swap the 4d55 into it - problem solved...

what about a bronco II? easier to come by in good shape and about the right size and shape!
I've already got a 1966 Scout 800.
Bronco's are stupidly expensive, Scouts are not, and they are plenty.
I don't want a Montero, and if I DID put a diesel in it, then I'd have issues with smog. Ie, "problem" isn't solved, it's just a NEW problem. PLUS, my D-50 is a 4WD diesel. That's another issue.
Since the scout I'm using is a 1966 Scout, it's smog exempt.
But more importantly, why does anyone give a $#&% about what vehicle I decide to build? LOL.

Bronco II's are cheap as fuck and way more common than a scout... im not talking about an early bronco Hey, if you already got the scout, go for it!
