    Engine clarification

    Hey guys i want to know EXACTLY what engine i have... im confused as there are different variants. I have 1983 dodge ram 50 2L 4 speed. on the firewall the plate that says what engine i have says it is a 4g63... Ive heard about a g63b as well and im just confused.... i want to know because i want to start buying parts but i want to know what parts will fit which

    I have the G63B and its a 86. The engine identification is engraved on the passenger side of the engine below the 1-2 spark plugs about 6 or so inches down on the flat spot located there. It may be hard to see since they didn't carve it in very deep. It should be there though and it will confirm your confusion. Basically the two engines G63B and 4G63 are the same. They added the 4 for 4 cylinders. I could of sworn though that older trucks like yours up to 1986 were all G63B but I probably am wrong.

    I've never seen an engine plate on the firewall say 4g63. I've seen a lot of them say G63B. 4g63 is the designation for the DOHC model. G63 is the block which is the same between the 2.

    I looked on the block at it says 4G63 same as the firewall..... whats different from this and g63b? and what other performance parts are there besides the weber?

    No real big differences really. That engine you can use a lot of eclipse parts or even swap over the head and EFI turbo setup.

    The "B" in G63B stands for belt. I also think the G63b were mostly in the trucks and the 4G63 were in cars. Many for V4 DOHC. The guts are same. Trying to double check if one of the water ports needs to be welded up or not on the exchange. Pennyman would probably know.

    As for the head swap... could i use the same intake manifold and carb if i swapped to dohc?

    And I cant fine anywhere about a 1983 ram 50 with a 4g63 2.0... i dont want to buy any parts until i know exactly what i have because i dont know what will fit.... But the DOHC swap would be interesting if i can keep the Weber carb... also if i did do a DOHC swap im assuming a turbo swap would be decently easy as well... and atm i have a 4 speed but i want to look at a 5 but i dont know what will work with what... lol sooo many questions

    The g63b was used in cars and trucks, the g63b was the first gen generation of the 4g63, when you see g63b it means 8 valve sohc, just like g64b means 2.4 sohc, when they added the dohc head in 1987 they called it 4g63. No you can't use the same intake manifold for the single cam engine to the dual cam engine.

    I have never heard of an 83 dodge Ram 50 with a 4g63 and a 4 spd manual. The bottom of the line truck came with a g63b and a 4 spd with that combo - wonder if someone swapped the motor and the badge. In fact, most g63bs in 83 had 5spd trannies, not 4 spd, so it's a rare combo We need pics of the motor - if the plugs on on the exhaust side, its a g63b, if in the middle of the valve cover, its a 4g63.

    I know its so weird ill take some pics of the block and the badge... the block is stamped 4g63 as well... and it wasnt swapped he was the only owner before me and it only has 140 thousand kilos.... and it mentions the 4spd combo in the manual as well and it mentions the 4g63 in comparison to the g63b for wires and plugs and engine specifics...

    from my understanding g63b and 4g63 are pretty much identical 6 bolt blocks if they are prior '93. after '93 i read that 4g63 went 7 bolt. And to answer ur question, yes it's possible but u can't keep ur carburetor, u have to go the FI route for DOHC.

    LSRMike knows these things about 4g63 swap.. maybe he can chime in

    LOL you are not alone. I can imagine there have been many forum arguments over these engine and what is what. I have owned mine since 87 and it still confuses me.

    yeah i still get confused.. but then again, first time i ever looked into a DSM engine was a year ago. there's sooo many variants.

    btw, nice 1st gen man. can u get a shot of the engine bay from above? engine kinda looks almost like mine..

    The best way to do a carburetor dohc 46g3 would to use motocycle carburetor, let me know if you interested

    That is a very nice clean 83 truck. One of the best I have seen that old and all.
    Unlike yours, I replaced my front grill and headlights from the stock single lights to the duel system like yours. Mitsubishi Mighty Max Trucks didn't have the 4 headlights so I switched to them. Other then that, mine looked the same but again is the G63B. Your air cleaner tube is missing, the one goes from end of aircleaner to a mount spot behind the passenger side headlights. Your heat riser tube is also missing, air cleaner to mount on exhaust manifold. Also a heat shield seems to be not installed on firewall on the exhaust manifold side of engine bay.
