    Mystery Sensor on head by fuel filter....?

    What is this for?? Seems it has been broken and nothing is connected to it... would love to know what it used to be for so i can fix it! Thanks!

    anybody??? I have looked through all the manuals and cannot find what this sensor does.... ? i assume its either oil, or coolant related.... :S

    its really annoying me. I went into a local place that services delicas (4d56) & they said that the 4d56 does not have anything there so im really at a loss.... i mean its not the end of the world, but i hate knowing there is something i could be missing lol.

    just joined today .i have the same sensor on my 1986 ranger turbo diesel and also wondered about the sensor.i believe it is a knock sensor because it is similar to the one on the turbo yamaha motorcycle i own.probably not used on these engines but may be used on another application.

    possibly a knock sensor that is not used in this application but may be used in another.it looks like the one used in turbo motorcycles.

    Maybe take another photo? This post has bothered me for a while, because I don't see any sensor in your photo. I see an injector, and I see a wire. But your photo doesn't show what the wire goes to, since whatever it is is hidden by an injector line. This is probably why you don't have many responses. Please take multiple photos to show what you are looking at.

    it's a female end connector right? if it is, here are your options if i may.

    A. A/C cut-out switch
    B. Temperature sending unit
    C. Injection pump speed sensor (on the right side of the pump).
    D. Glow plugs
    E. others

    Definitely not a rust detector because that puppy would be redlined. Time for a wire brush, I'm sure you must live in Canada where they over salt the roads. That has got to suck when it starts accelerating on everything like that.

    Sorry for off topic, have you found the name of the part you were searching for? If not...where do the lines and hoses on it got to within the engine bay? Or are those lines just left unattached that are showing in your photo.

    This sensor is also on the 86 diesel ranger I am working on. It is located behind the injection pump on the head. The braided hose in the picture is the return feed to pump and grey fat wire is glow bus bar wire. The sensor has two male prongs that connect to a female connector in the wiring loom for the injection pump and glow plugs. Cannot find reference to it anywhere! Ford manual does not have it, and the mighty max's I have worked on in the past do not have it. The motor I am working on had the sensor broken when re installing the motor.

    To clarify, the sensor is question is the circular knob right above the injector line clamp in picture.

    Oh wow. I thought that was just a bolt. I'll go take a look at mine when I get home to see if I have the same.

    So I have something there, but mine just looks to be a grounding lug held in with a bolt. Since it is on the head, I assume it is a ground for the glow plugs. Maybe your's is just a bolt that has been rounded off? Have you ever tried taking it off to look at it?

    Mine is definitely a sensor of some sort, there is a plug that fits onto the exposed terminal- until the terminal got broken that is! I removed the sensor, maybe I can get a picture up of it at some point to give another look for everyone. My glow plugs ground over on the pump itself, top of pump on the inside where the fuel line goes along from supply.

    Isn't that the temp sensor??!! I have an 86 diesel Ranger as well, and I've actually been F'$%ing with that thing all day, had to re-solder the wire.

    My assumption would be, it might be a tempt sensor for the glow plug relays to know when to stop cycling.

    the temp sensor is at front of head infront of injector 1

    Hey,

    Yeah I just realised that as I pulled it off and the temp gauge didnt go down. Could it be what sets off the alarm when you overheat?

    So I have concluded that sensor is what reads the temperature of the head, and will sound a buzzer if its too hot. Apparently the Delicas just have a plug there and it's not used for anything. Mine was being weird and just setting the buzzer off so I just unplugged it...
