Starting problem after sitting for a bit
Working on my buds 1987 D50 power ram 4x4. I have poured fresh gas in the carb but I had no spark to start with. I replaced the coil wire and now I have spark but it looks weak. Using a multi meter I have checked all I know. I have read there is a start relay and wonder about its function. The one thing the truck does is after you have turned the key to the crank position and then as the key comes back you will get maybe a hot spark? I am not sure but when you do this the engine will respond with one grunt or reaction like it is going to start. However it is just one revolution. I am buffaloed at this point. Any thoughts? I forgot to say it is a 2.6 engine. Thanks John

Hi and welcome to mightyram. First place to start - check timing/tune/normal ignition service parts + plugs and gaps. If it's all good, then try replacing the ignition coil and ballast resistor. A coil has a lifespan of about 10 years before it starts to break down - it causes poor fuel economy, plug fouling, hard starts and loss of mid to top end rpm power. If you have no spark at all, then you'll need to look at the ICM in the distributor.
