Whoa, that's a first for me - haven't seen one before
There is one of them around here. I saw it at Harbor Freight last year right after or just before someone on here posted a picture of one.
There's one here I see at a site I work at, it's got a wellside tray, im pretty sure it's been made from the back of a wrecked van.
You can also get a quad-cab version:
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/c...972190348.html
I tracked down the owner of the Delica and it turns out it's someone I already know, he just got the truck a couple months ago and I hadn't seen it...
He loves it but says the engine is a dog, it can barely get up to highway speeds. I haven't had a chance to look at it closely so not sure exactly which engine he has, but I do know it doesn't have a turbo. My guess the engine is a 4d56, same as the quad in the craigslist ad. The seller of that truck did a swap for a456d with turbo and it's claiming a huge improvements, but he's trying to sell it so I guess you have to take that with a grain of salt.
My friend is considering installing a turbo, but I'm wondering if any of the diesel experts here have any thoughts on whether or not that will make a significant difference or not. Does it make sense to add the turbo, or should he be considering something more drastic, like a V6 swap?
V6 swapping that is going to take a donor truck and a lot of effort. A turbo diesel will not only be easier but the Delica 4x4's had it as an option so you could find specific parts to do it. He could do the upgrade on the turbo in the process and get it running strong straight off the mark.
How much more power can be reasonably expected by adding the turbo? Is there only one turbo that will fit this engine, or are there different sizes?
My wife's car has a small turbo and I know that people upgrade by swapping it for bigger units, there are 2 or 3 bigger sizes available for that one.
A good question. I would conservatively expect a 10-15% improvement in torque. The TD05 turbo engine made 80kW, the TC04 waste gate turbo made 86kW. So the next step up turbo should put the engine in the 90-95 kW range. It's the added torque that will make the difference. It will also depend on whether or not an intercooler is going to be in the upgrade as well.
He wants to add an intercooler, but for some reason the shop he's talking about it is trying to talk him out of it. Not sure why.
How much of an impact would and intercooler have?

The shop probably doesn't want to do the plumbing. There is some assing around to do a conventional vehicle but a van like a Delica has forward accessible airflow issues as far as mounting an intercooler is concerned...
We have 'Delica' imports here in Oz but I've never seen a flatbed style configured example (mostly 'space cabs' like a 4x4 off road people mover thing) This model Delica looks like it's based on our old L300 express 4x4's -

The 4x4 vans are a weird looking contraption. When they are raised with offroad wheels they are freaking enormous - they dwarf Monteros.
I just see a big tire in the photo -- geezer, what is the land of UPI (?) you went there to get a radiator, no..?
edit: Them Delica trucks, can they be registered to drive on public roads ?
edit edit: Mr. Paco, I used to exit the thruway at Ballston Spa to get home
Keep in mind that on this truck the seats are right over the front wheel well, so the cab is really high. There is astep to get in, and you need to use it.
Geezer, I can only see a piece of the tire on that picture, and if I click on it nothing happens. What's the rest of it?
Xboxrox, where you stationed around here or are you from NY?
the turbo will make a big difference on this truck. in fact, the intake on that NA motor is a highly desirable mod for the turbo motors, as it flows better.
