    Strange rear end gears

    Here's what I have in the 1980 D-50 to run 32" tires:

4.88 (4.875) ring and pinion set; was sold by John Baker Performance in 1982; Mitsubishi parts; 39 teeth on ring gear, 8 on pinion. Ring gear is 10-bolt.
Installed straight into 1980 Dodge D-50 rearend. Told it is part number MB 527147. When I tracked down John Baker a decade later he said it was a stock Mitsubishi part, but didn't remember what vehicle.

When it blew due to cracked tooth (long story,) I was number 19 on the waiting list until Mitsu in Japan would set up the CNC to make a run of 20. Had to order a second set to get them to run. Have a spare so it will never happen again!

Told it was only put in something called a "high-altitude version Montero" and is very rare. Now made of Unobtainium ...

Looking in the Wiki it doesn't say anything about them.

I have a John Baker catalog from 1987 that listed those gears for both monteros and D-50/mm - it was from some special version of the montero / pajero not available in the US. That catalog will be posted shortly. John Baker got special access to the mitsu parts bins as he was racing class 7 off road in the 1980's and winning.

He had a lot of great stuff for the 1st gen; wish I had purchased more of it when he was in business! These gears are the cat's meow for 32" tires, even the speedo reads accurately.

Me too; I should have bought the torsen lsd he was selling - the ultimate locker, but at 600 to 800 for the locker, it was outrageous.

why so low on the running gears. i've got 33's that i run on my truck when off-roading with stock 4.222 gears and i shift into third gear by 25-30mph and am in 5th by 55mph. when my 31's are on the truck i can start in second gear and take off. and i do have the stock gearing in the truck, it has been confirmed. i have even thought of getting taller gears cause these are almost too short.

Stock motor (105hp max) and it keeps the speedo accurate.
