Y'all must have replaced and rebuilt these. What are my options for a cheap replacement while I find someone to rebuild the stock one? I don't mind having a backup.

Any of the astron alternators will fit
BUt the diesel alternator has the vacuum pump built into the back of the alternator. To use a regular alternator, you need to install an electric vacuum pump to supply vacuum for the brake booster.

I did not know about the vac pump.
Not that this pertains to the OP's requirement for "cheap", I wonder how well an electric booster from a Honda would fit in there. Then one would not need the pump and could go with a big boy alternator to power their 31" subs. I live in a low-population state, so finding parts like that for experimenting is no bueno for the most part.
Good catch Pennyman, foolish oversight by me.
Realized I never followed up here but due to the inability to find a modern aftermarket Alt I felt good about, I let her sit while I had it rebuilt. Put it back in and ended up having to go back to the same shop immediately to rebuild the starter! Fun stuff. She's purring now but the digital tac converter for the diesel is now completely bonkers. Anyone following this thread use a Dakota Digital Converter for a diesel swap like this??
