Major smoke!

Major smoke!

Postby astrawn » Mon Aug 03, 2009 1:19 pm

Well I got my 92MM all back together and she was running great for a week. Then Sat morning I was in a drive-thru and smoke started billowing out of my exhaust pipe. Looks like my head gasket is leaking by AGAIN! I torqued down the NEW head bolts to what the book said after I had my head reworked and new head gasket. Timing was dead nuts, and I was just idleing. I havent got the motor over 55mph. I dont know what is wrong. Next step might be a piece of dynamite.

The head bolts need to be retorqued.

Bingo! The stock head bolts don't stretch when torqued. BUT new head bolts DO. Therefore after 500 miles or so you should re-torque! If that doesn't fix the problem you may have to re gasket it. Also... you said the head was reworked, I'm assuming it was resurfaced as well... BUT what about the block surface? That may be your issue. Let us know how things are going.

im pretty sure i read somewhere the torque specs for 2.0 and 2.4 cylinder head bolts being revised due to insufficient torque specs in the FSMs and such. damn, cant remeber the site i read this crap on.

How was the threads on the head bolts? Any residue on them? White powder?
