Turbo questions

Holy shit this thread.

Well, Here is the truth about ebay turbos.

The are mostly knock off garrett units. They are all going to be unbalanced. Now, You may think no big deal. Wrong, When you have something spinning at 100,000+ RPM, You want the fucker to be balanced. I have only seen a picture of one glued together, Never IRL.

The rule of thumb with an ebay turbo is to not go above 12psi, And don't expect it to last more then 6 months of daily driving/beating. My first ebay lasted for a year, My second was broke on arrival, and my 3rd lasted 4 months.

Turbo specs

My first turbo T3-T4 50 A/R. At 6-7 psi it lasted a year. I killed it once I got my car tuned and pushed it to 12lbs. I still pulled 3 cars on the mustang I was racing at the time though:)

2nd turbo T3-T4 60 A/R, Slapped it on the car and it wouldn't hold pressure.

3rd turbo, T3-T4 60 A/R, I took this one apart and made sure everything was ok. It lasted 4 months at 14lbs, and maybe one spike to 16lbs on a cold night.

I will NEVER buy another ebay turbo, Granted the ones I did buy were 80 bucks, And the 3rd was a replacement for free they still suck balls. They are only ok at best for cars that have stock engines that will never see over 6psi. The only turbo that I will buy now is a REAL Garrett unit. However, there are other well respected companies to purchase from.

The next step is ebay manifolds. I can not say enough about these piles of shit. I have more patch welds on my manifold then a I ever care to think of. I've had my entire wastegate fall off the manifold, Twice. DO NOT EVER EVER EVER EVER think of getting an ebay manifold, Or any cheap manifold for that matter. You are only setting your self up for a lot of work down the road. They will crack, They will need repairs, They flow like shit. In fact, Here are some pictures of my lovely ebay manifold.

PILE O SHIT.

Ebay intercoolers are the one part you can buy with out to many problems. Unless you plan on pushing over 400whp they do just fine. Just buy from a seller with good rep. I have one on my car, Its beat to shit, been in 3 front end wrecks, and mowed down a possom at 80mph. Still no leaks.

Cool, the turbo info from Garrett helps a lot for a turbo newb. All I thought was you need a turbo, manifold, wastegate, and intercooler, but there is much more involved. I like how they use math to explain it all. For a math guy, really helps.

Thanks alot everyone for your info. Maybe I'll do the 4g63t swap ;)

The easiest way to boost a motor is to build a blow through carb (modified 38MM) and FAB a c2 Procharger to the motor. You make a bracket, get a different crank pulley, run the piping to the carb and tune like a N/A motor. No wires, no intercooling, no ECU's etc. After extensive research, this is my new undertaking. The carb is done and now I am on to making the bracket and piping. I am also trying to find the the crank pulley that has the same weight as the stock one as I already balanced my lower end.

I have to pony up $3000k for the Procharger and I will have closer to 4k into when I am done. That is a reliable 50-60 HP. It might be pricey but is ultra reliable and a 3 fingered retard can tune it.

Plus, I might have some bragging rights. I've never seen another 2.6 built like it.

BTW - I called Procharger and the C2 is designed for the 350z. It is tuneable from 5 to 10 PSI depending on yor build. It is a very universal application. Any bigger, say like a c4, would be too much boost. ALmost forgot....NO TURBO LAG!

All you need to make your 38MM a blow through Carb is a different float. You DO NOT want a brass float. They are very thin and will collapse under pressure. You want to get the thick nitro filled platic float. This is the only modification you need to make to withstand boost. Call WEBER Direct and they will tell you the same thing. Some 38MM's already came with the plastic floats and some did not. Its easy to check and if not, the part only cost $12 bucks and about 5 minutes of your time to install. Do not touch your jetting until you drive it for the first time. If you dont like the results, make adjustments. The only other modification is to your plenum gasket which absolutely needs to be airtight. Go to your parts store and buy the Felpro Blue gasket material and apply a thin layer to both sides of the plenum gasket. This will make an airtight seal.

This is all you need.

The additional modifications, say for a supercharger, would be a good quality Pressure Regulator to regulate the amount of fuel during idle and WOT. You do not want to starve your engine under boost or run to rich at idle. The vacuum line to the intake off the PR handles this for you.

Nice info. I think TEP charges over $150 for this mod.

the hat that fits over a 38 dges weber is 150+ the rest is mainly pipe bending and carb setup - that photo is for reference - most of their stuff is overpriced. That will work for either turbo or supercharger - the procharger was one option i looked at as well as several eaton variants and the mazda millienium screwcharger.
