Rear end swap

Postby mightycelica88 » Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:27 pm

the 1 ton mighty max and 4 wheel drive trucks have a different gear ratio than the base model. does anyone know if the differential case bolts are the same so it can be swapped easily? Im pretty sure the 4 wheel and 1 tons are also a non-integral differential, just like the base model, so i would think they would. thanks for any input. This is for a 1991 2.4 base model

The 2nd gen montys have a 4.625 ratio with a 9 inch ring gear - I've read that it is a copy of a ford 9 inch but stronger. You would have to swap the whole axle, but you will gain disc brakes and LSD; the u joint is also much larger. These were hung under the truck with a 4 link, panhard bar, and airbags, although it might not work under a pickup. I have one I may try to mount under a first gen d50.

so basically a 4.625 from a second gen montero 4 cyl will swap straight into the 4 cyl 2 wheel dr. MM (1991)without replacing axles? it seems some of that info is a bit arguable from what other people said. Still great info tho! I would rather go with the 4.22 so i dont kill my gas mileage, im mainly looking for the truck to get faster and be able to haul more. I use my truck as a daily driver and a work truck. Does anyone know engine RPM differences at a certain speed between the 3.9 and 4.22 rear ends? just curious.

1997 Isuzu Rodeo. Is a Dana 44 with disc brakes. It's 2inch wider overall and you can put all sorts of gears into it. ARB. Lockers, you name it. But keep in mind you will need to make some Presidential Adjustments to it. Thats whats in the rear of the new truck i'm building.
