ECM same in 4x4 as in 2wd?

I have a 1992 Dodge Power Ram 50 and the ECM went out according to the shop. They wanted atleast $600 to fix it, so I decided against it since the truck was burning so much oil and bought a new truck. I may have just found a computer that will work, and he said it will work in the 1991/92 ram 50/mighty max 2.4l, but it doesn't mention if it is for an auto/manual, or 4x4/2wd. Mine is a 4x4 manual. Anyone know, I need to know asap, Thanks.

it should work the autos have a separate ecu for the trans. and 2wd vs 4wd shouldnt matter either.

EDIT: these computers aren't coded to the vin right? I will be able to use one out of a wrecked truck, correct?

Correct... OBD1 aren't Vin Coded! Good luck with the truck.

the 4x4s use a different lil mini ECU that controls the 4x4 light and some other things its the black relay under the kick panel youll see it when you get ready to pull the ECU.

BTW KX you gonna have that thing running by August? I otta have something mitsu ready to run by then.

Thanks guys, I wondered what that little black relay was for. I don't really know what we are going to do with the truck. The ecm will make it run, but then it has the oil burning issue. I don't know if I'm going to sell it when I get it going, or keep it around. It really was a fun truck, and got a lot more looks in it than I do in my new one, plus it is already paid for. I guess it really depends what my parents end up deciding, because it is still sitting on their land (only 17). My dad really wants to keep it around though. It is the last weekend in August right? Thanks

i thought the common reason they go on 2.0 and 2.4 FI is the leaking capacitor issue.
and your oil buring could be just worn valve stem seals. although if the rings are bad...
have you pulled it apart and checked, these are somewhat easily repairable issues if you have the time.

No, I haven't really messed with it since the computer died. We did order another one and it should be here next week. My biggest problem is I don't have a lot of income since I am back to making payments on my new to me truck. I also don't have an engine hoist or engine stand, but one of my dads friends said we could borrow his. This would be the first engine my dad and I have ever torn into though, but my dad is really good at mechanical stuff. Him and I rebuilding it will probably depend on how much my mom complains about it sitting.lol

These little motors aren't bad to tear into. As long as you have a service manual for all the torque specifications. glad to see you found this site too, thought i was the lonely stater again.
